Expanding Empire

Story and photo by Jacob Page Yealands Wine Group (YWG) is set to see new levels of expansion with company founder and executive director, Peter Yealands keen to find more land in Marlborough, expand into more international markets and find an investment partner who wants to be the driving force of the business’ future. Continued page 2 Peter Yealands beside the concrete slab that when completed this week will add in excess of 2 million litres of storage space on the outskirts of the winery.

Yealands casts net for future options Continued from page 1. YWG was named New Zealand Wine Producer of the Year at the International Wine and Spirit Competition this year. Yealands vision began in 2008 on nearly 1000 hectares of vines is now producing over 1 million cases a year and exporting to more than 80 countries. “In the last four years we have grown over 40 per cent compounding. Yealands said the rate of growth had got to the point that he could not sustain it by himself. “To help accommodate last year’s vintage, we decided to expand the winery so its capability went from 15,000 tonne to 25,000 tonne. “Last year we put down an additional concrete slab as part of our growth and we

added another 2 million litres of storage into our operation and right now we are repeating that which will give us in excess of 2 million litres again.” “I’m hoping for the 2016 vintage, I can do the remaining floor area which is another

50 per cent and put a roof over the whole (storage area). “While we have enormous demand and potential we are limited by the number of grapes we can produce so we are going out with a view of increasing our production in

any way possible.” Yealands said to become No 1 was part of at least a five year plan. “We are about to take on multi-national (companies) and that’s not a one man band stand.” Yealands said if the way was executed well he could see his current staffing number double in Marlborough from 150 to at least 300 “We’re either looking at buying land or even looking at buying vineyards provided they can produce high quality wines.” Yealands says the land would be found in Marlborough and will continue to put emphasis on sustainable practices and innovation that has seen the company win numerous awards. “Marlborough is the brand. “At the moment we are the

sixth largest (wine exporter in New Zealand). “Marlborough has a great opportunity going forward. We will have a true appellation equal to the best in the world and I want to be part of it,” Yealands says. “We will expand (internationally) but we want to develop in the markets we are in at the moment. I’d liken it to the fact I’m casting a net and while I have an idea on what I’d like to catch, at this point I am unsure. What I am looking for is a partner with a like-mind and a partner who has full pockets and is prepared to empty them. Yealands said as he approached 70-years-old he was keen to have his first real holiday since 1991.

One man’s toy story Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Wooden toys have always been a favourite with children, something Blenheim man Bob Laughton enjoys himself. Bob has been handcrafting and selling many different toys from his Maxwell Road home for around 10 years. He has made everything from tractors, trucks, rocking horses, dolls furniture, children’s furniture and even a model farm shed. He insists the time spent tinkering in the garage is purely a hobby, and enjoys seeing the delight on children’s faces when they see his creations. “Even the adults enjoy having a look through it all. I just enjoy creating them and it’s not about

making money, it’s about the enjoyment that the children will get from the toys,” he says. There is even a selection of bedding handmade for the wooden cots Bob makes. Asked what would be the most unusual item on the shelf, Bob says it would be a working bulldozer which features a pulleysystem to work the front blade. The most popular? “The train sets have been a hit in the past, and parents seem to like the toddler wooden trolleys,” he says. To view Bob’s wooden toys, look out for the sign on Maxwell Road, opposite A&P Park. RIGHT: Bob Laughton in his toy workshop.

Police campaign nabs drink drivers Marlborough Police were out in force patrolling the roads during the first weekend of the new lower drink driving limits, and as a result a total of seven people will be facing drink driving charges. One person also received an infringement for breath alcohol between the new range of 250 and 400 microgrammes per litre of breath. The highest breath alcohol level recorded over the weekend was in excess of 900mic.

Area Prevention Manager Senior Sergeant Peter Payne said the prevention team conducted numerous road checkpoints on both Friday and Saturday evenings last week. He said officers would continue to focus on drink driving as the holiday season approached and warned all drivers to expect to undergo a breath test anywhere and at any time. “With the new lowered breath and blood alcohol limits the only safe option is to find

CAKES TO BE DONATED alternative transport or a sober driver if you’re drinking,” he said. He said people needed to be aware also that their breath alcohol level could still be over the limit the following morning if they had a late night. “Drivers need to get a good sleep and have plenty to eat before getting back behind the wheel.”

Big turnout for parade Judging by the smiles on people’s faces on Saturday, it’s safe to say the Blenheim Christmas Parade and Cracker Christmas Festival were a huge success. Marlborough 4 Fun chief executive Katrina Lange says there were around 1000 more in the town centre for the event, and over 30 floats in the parade. “The town looked so vibrant and full of happy people, which is what this event is all about. “The new parade time of 5pm was well received, despite comments made earlier but overall we are so pleased with how it all came together. “Looking around I saw so many smiling faces and in general we got so much positive feedback,” she says. Planning began eight months ago, Katrina says, and has a huge level of volunteer involvement. “We really appreciate the effort people put into their floats, and all the volunteers who have put so much in to make this day the success it was.” The first place winning float was the Marlborough Kindergarten Association and second was the Nativity Church. Winning the walking group section was the Marlborough District Brass Band.

The Marlborough Cake Decorators Guild will present their Christmas cakes to the Salvation Army, this morning as a donation to families in need this festive season. The Guild will present a large cake to the oncology ward for them to share with staff, patients, families and friends.

SPENDING SLOW Marlborough has seen a 5.5 per cent increase in electronic transactions and a more than four per cent increase in spending compared to the last 12 months as the Christmas spending season got off to a slow start around New Zealand. The latest Paymark figures show that although spending has increased by 4.9 per cent nationally, it is well below last year’s growth rate of 8.6% for the same period last year.

Well-known Blenheim horse racing identities Patrick and Mike O’Brien are two of four men facing fraud charges after the largest investigation in the history of the gambling sector. They, along with Nelson man Paul Max and a man who cannot be identified are between them facing 20 charges of obtaining by deception and could face jail time. The alleged offending involved Blenheim-based Bluegrass. Operation Chestnut allegedly found people associated with horse racing were helping with the sale of pubs to outfits that would allow trusts in support of racing clubs to take control of the venue’s pokie machines. The men will appear in court in February and the O’Briens have indicated they will defend the charges.

Confidence in Picton spurs cinemas investment Picton Cinemas is in expansion mode. It has just invested more than $81,000 as part of a $183,000 project upgrading its Cinemas to full digital DCP cinema using the latest technology from NEC. The upgrades will enable Picton Cinemas to screen more mainstream and childrens’ movies alongside the arthouse movies they are renowned for. The first upgraded cinema opens this Thursday coinciding with the New Zealand wide launch of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (M). Picton Cinemas director John Reuhman says now that Picton’s future as the interisland port has been confirmed he has the confidence to invest. “While Clifford Bay was in the air we simply could not afford the risk.” Picton Cinemas will open daily at 9.30am and will have up to seven screenings a day. “There is definitely now an air of confidence about Picton and a raft of new initiatives under consideration or announced. It’s becoming infectious and it’s all go,” John says. “On the business front, and

A 50-year-old Blenheim man had to be airlifted to Nelson Hospital following a motorcycle accident in the Wairau Valley on Sunday. The man was riding with friends along State Highway 63 near Tophouse, when an animal ran across the road causing him to lose control and fall from his bike. The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter intensive care paramedic treated the man at the scene for leg injuries and once stabilised, was then flown to Nelson Hospital Emergency Dept in a stable condition for further assessment.

Straker earns life membership Alan Straker is still coming to terms with his life membership to the Marlborough branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI). After 23 years as principal of Whitney Street School, and countless occasions of sacrifice outside of school hours, Straker was the first person to receive a life membership. Straker stole the show at the NZEI graduating ceremony, at the Clubs of Marlborough, which recognised more than a dozen budding educators becoming fullyfledged teachers as well as teachers who were retiring. Straker was as shocked as anyone to receive the award from long-time friend and NZEI Marlborough

Straker says he still remembered how he felt when he graduated in 1972. “I’m sure the 12 or so graduates this year will be feeling just as proud as I was back then.” Straker said he was passionate about educating children and that’s what had always motivated him. “I’ve tried to make a difference where I could because I think school can be one of the best things going in a child’s life, especially if

ized the Marlborough District Gymnastics Festival for the past 25 years and there are 800 kids that go to that. “If something needs to get done then he is always there.”

Jane Laing and John King of the Marlborough branch of the Ulysses Club are gearing up for the club’s annual Toy Ride for charity this Saturday.

Club revved for toy run Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk If you hear motorcycles coming your way this Saturday, have a toy donation ready as the Marlborough Branch of the Ulysses Club is holding its annual Toy Run for charity. This is the fifth year the club has held the run, collecting (unwrapped) toy donations for the Salvation Army Toy Appeal. Club committee member Jane Laing says she understands there are around 100 families in need this year, so she hopes the community will support them. “We are collecting gifts and toys

for children of all ages, including teenagers, which will bring some special Christmas cheer to these families. “We have already got the ball rolling with gifts the club purchased from $200 raised from a raffle we run recently which is exciting,” she says. Around 150 riders have already joined the charity ride and will convoy from the Woodbourne Tavern in Renwick through Blenheim’s Market Street, before parking up at the Blenheim School. Organisers are also hoping more people from the community with ‘road-worthy’ motorcycles will

join in. “It’s such a fun and worthwhile charity ride which is supported so well, so if anyone wants to join in they can meet us at the Woodbourne Tavern before we leave,” branch coordinator John King says. Rain or shine, Ulysses riders will meet at the Woodbourne Tavern at 11am, leave at 12noon and expect to arrive at Blenheim School by 12:30pm. There they will have a gold coin sausage sizzle running and will be selling special ‘toy run’ pins. Proceeds from the pins will go directly to the Salvation Army.

Marcus Henry Blenheim

I certainly think there should be. If Picton has two trees surely Blenheim should have one.

No I don’t think we need a big tree. There are heaps of wilding pines out there that can be decorated and put to use as Christmas trees in Blenheim.

Yes I do. It brings the Christmas spirit and it’s always nice. Most towns have something nice and Christmassy.

Of course it should. It was nicely displayed, and it gave a bit of Christmas cheer.

Yes. It will make this more Christmassy.

Dear Ed, So the Cruise Ship season is well under way, so why are there less passengers to be seen in town of Picton? I have been marketing on the foreshore for the past 8 years and I have never seen so few people around as this year. Many rumours are around that a far greater number are being taken on

buses to the wineries. Picton was under a cloud for several years re the possible move of the ferries and now when it gets back up and running it appears the very people that can help (MDC) and Marlborough 4 Fun the only solution they can come up with is take them all off to the wineries. Disapointed.

Ban more than sugar Good on the Mayor and the Blenheim Council banning the sale of health damaging sugary drinks. It’s a pity they couldn’t have been more pro active on the ban of “legal highs” another product that defies logic! And lastly, great to hear they want to trial some additional free sites for freedom campers, but they will need

Super Liquor

to stick up some more ‘No over night parking’ signs around town. I regularly see cars, vans and motorhomes parked around the Picton Primary School and the mess they leave behind. In Australia, if you are within 15km of an official camp site then it is illegal to over night park. Chris. Picton

Tracey Bary Blenheim Yeah I do. I don’t think the town looks festive at the moment. It would be good to have something to make it look a bit brighter.

Grant for DMT questioned Dear Ed, As one who abseiled off a five story building happily to raise funds to the Marlborough Foundation for Youth Development. Also Food Bank Collector and supporter of many charities around Marlborough I was personally horrified, disgusted and ashamed to see the Destination Marlborough Trust be granted $20,000.00 as published on Friday 28th December. This on top of some $600,000.00 plus from the Marlborough District Council and that’s before an additional $200,000.00 granted subsequently. I have read both the application details for CCT funding and the reporting requirements. I am not convinced this organisation is deserving or able to meet the prescribed criteria but, subject to closer public scrutiny I am happy to be proven wrong. Two MDC appointees also sit on the Board of DM. How they are able to morally agree to this is beyond comprehension. I am only sorry more deserving charities missed out as a result of this grant. Ashamed.

The Edwin Fox today in Picton. Members of the Havelock Masonic Lodge Dennis McKinley and Chris Hobbs with Wairau Hospital’s charge nurse and manager of the theatre’s Day Stay unit Monette Johnston and Radiology clerical support Paula Lucas.

TV gifted to hospital Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Patients waiting for appointments in Wairau Hospital’s Day Stay unit have a brand new flat screen television to keep them occupied, thanks to a very kind donation from the Havelock Masonic Lodge. Members Chris Hobbs and Dennis McKinley officially gifted the 42 inch TV to charge nurse

of the theatre’s Day Stay unit Monette Johnston yesterday. The TV was purchased from money fundraised by the lodge, and so far it has been a hit with waiting patients. “It gives people something to focus on while they are waiting, I think it’s a wonderful gift and we are very grateful,” Monette says.

Edwin Fox in the spotlight Picton’s Edwin Fox, one of the world’s oldest ships was the venue for a book launch yesterday. It also hosted the formal handing over of a new steering wheel. Edwin Fox Maritime Museum manager Karen McLeod said, since the society bought the ship in 1965, it had never had a ship’s wheel. “I heard it went into storage in the early 60s and then it burnt in a fire,” she said. The ship had its “161st birthday” at the beginning of November, and is the subject of a new book, written by Nelson-based author Nigel Costley. Published by Nikau Press, the book is from a concept developed by late Marlborough author Don Grady. Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman formally launched the book. Mr Sowman said the Edwin Fox was a real treasure for Marlborough. Not only did it bring early European settlers to the province, but it played a key role in building New Zealand’s early trade in refrigerated meat. “This is a timely reminder of the history we have in Picton and Marlborough as a whole.” The Edwin Fox was built in 1853 in Sulkeali on the Hooghly River in India and sold to Duncan Dunbar II in 1854. It is the world’s ninth oldest wooden troop ship and was used to carry soldiers to the Crimean War (1853-

1856), convicts to Australia and to bring immigrants from Britain to New Zealand. In the 1880s steam arrived and Edwin Fox was fitted out as a floating freezer hulk and used in several New Zealand ports. In 1897, it was towed to Picton and used as a freezer ship and then as a coal hulk. The ship was virtually derelict when the Edwin Fox Society took it on as a project. The New Zealand Historic Places Trust placed a category-one listing on the ship.

For Red Salt Cafe, Bar & Restaurant head chef Ashley Guy (pictured), putting together a dish is much more than just assembling food on a plate. It’s about using the plate as a blank canvas to show off every individual ingredient and creating an unforgettable experience for the customer. With this in mind, it came as no surprise when Ashley unveiled one of his new summer menu dishes soon to be released. The pan fried salmon fillet served on potato rostis and accompanied by home made tomato pesto, balsamic reduction and watercress, is an exciting preview of what is to come. Red Salt Café, Bar & Restaurant is owned by Lani and Earl Hagaman, who also own the Mariners Mall in Picton. Ashley and his partner Ashleigh Meadowcroft manage the business and say since it opened on February 1, it has been well supported by the locals. With much to boast about, it is no wonder it has attracted a loyal following. Ashleigh and her front-of-house team serve the hugely popular Marvel coffee, as well as a range of specialty hot chocolates. Ready-to-go are gourmet hot pies as well as delectable desserts and sweet treats. For those who enjoy their sandwiches, customers can choose from a selection

of made-to-order flavours available, including salmon and cucumber, slow roasted beef and onion marmalade, chicken caeser and BLT. For sit down meals, Ashley is currently adding the final touches to his summer menu, which will see some classic ingredients brought together in an artistic and tantalising manner. A sneak peak of what is soon to come: • Anti-pesto platter of cured meats, local cheeses, hot smoked salmon, marinated mussels, accompanying salad, pate and fresh breads. This is matched with a glass of Bladen Wines Sauvignon Blanc. • Beef, bacon and blue cheese burger on a home made Turkish burger bun. • Ginger beer battered fish and chips. • Chef’s pasta and salad of the day. What is perhaps the most unique feature of this menu is that most of the dishes are gluten free. There are also a range of gluten free slices. Red Salt Café, Bar & Restaurant is currently open Monday through to Saturday, closed Sunday but once a new chef joins the team and the liquor license comes through, Ashley says the restaurant will start its dinner service and be open seven days over summer.

An unforgettable dining experience The restaurant is open for dinner from 6pm to late Bookings recommended • Ph 577 9945 hotel@durville.com

Frozen yoghurt Who doesn’t love frozen yoghurt and sorbet! Red Salt Café, Bar and Restaurant officially opened its ‘Antarctic Yoghurt’ right next door and already, the locals love it! Customers can choose from all four flavours, then top with the many sweet sauces, lollies, nuts and sprinkles on offer. Most of the yoghurts are gluten free, while the sorbets are dairy free - making them an ideal sweet treat or dessert. “With over 200 flavours to choose from, we will be changing them up

every two to three weeks,” Ashley says. “Our current flavours are; snickers bar, wild berry, blue bubble gum and lemon sorbet. “Some of the flavours on their way are coffee mocha, crunchy doughnut, cola, raspberry, vanilla, passion fruit, dairy free chocolate and pink bubble gum.” Antarctic Yoghurt is the very first in Marlborough, and will be having a grand opening this Sunday with prizes and activities. Opening hours are 11am - 8pm.

By Celeste Lodewyk A local woman has come to the aid of a friend and work colleague whose home was recently burgled, and thieves made off with her wedding funds and ring among other items. Sally Barnett was heartbroken for her friend who has been saving for her wedding, and set out to ‘surprise’ her with a cash donation. Sally paid for, and put together a hamper valued at $150, and went around Blenheim businesses selling raffle tickets in her own time. She says she was greeted with immediate support and as a result she raised $660, which she says is to help go toward her friend’s wedding fund. “People really felt bad for what hap-

Missing sheep mystery Just whether there has been rustling afoot at a Marlborough farm that may have seen up to 60 sheep stolen will be resolved by the end of the week. Blenheim Police says a weekend muster on a sheep station in the Brancott area revealed an unknown shortfall in sheep numbers, possibly up to 60. However, on Monday, a large number of sheep were found in a paddock where there should be none and until the

property owner comes home on Friday, no one can make head-nor-tail of the situation. The police have been talking to farmers of surrounding stations, it looks like the sheep wandered away from where they were left and could now be anywhere. They said they have no information at this stage supporting stock theft.

Garden raises $838 Joyce and Ian Cattermole opened their Blenheim garden to the public last month to fundraise for the Simply The Breast Dragon Boat Team. Around 50 people went through, contributing toward a total of $838.50 raised. Joyce wishes to thank those who participated and making it the successful day it was.

Volleyball finals Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers’ and Premiers’ Schools’ Competition are set for finals action starting this Friday There will many close games to complete the round robin of the schools’ competition, Renwick Diggers played the Bohally Cookie Monsters with both teams showing excellent passing and serving skills however, with almost perfect passing, Renwick won the first set 25-22. Bohally played well at the net and won the second set 25-21. The third set could have gone either way but Bohally dominated with great serving from Year 7 players Anna Gardiner and Maddy Croad. With such good passing skills being shown from both teams, Bohally were also the team to scramble for almost every ball and deserved the third set win of 25-17. Fairhall Phoenix needed to win their game against Queen Charlotte College (QCC) Ace for a chance to get into the

finals and knew they could after beating them in the first week. QCC were not to be underestimated though as they have played extremely well this term and played a very close first set with very long and good rallies to win 25-19. Fairhall regrouped and played their usual well-structured game to turn the tables in the second set and won comfortably 25-14. The third set again was close with very nice rallies. Great overarm serving from Tom Remacha, Hannah and Sophie Whittall and Mereana Ave saw them attain the win 25-21 and the game. The finals will be played this Friday. The Tasman Spikers’ Representative Tournament will be played at Stadium 2000 on Sunday commencing at 9am with pool play concluding with finals at 1.45pm. Marlborough schools will comprise 4 teams- two boys and two girls from years 7 and 8.

Young race driver gets first win at Pukekohe

Sport

By Jacob Page Young Blenheim motor racing driver Brook Reeve has scored his maiden race win in the New Zealand Formula First championship at just his third outing, over the weekend The 17-year-old rookie added two podium finishes from the three races at the Pukekohe race circuit. Reeve scored his first race win by crossing the finish line 100th-of-a-second ahead of his closest rival after a race long battle that saw the field swopping positions on every lap. At one point in the race, Reeve had dropped back to seventh place but pushed forward to lead for three laps, then fell back again and left his winning charge for the last lap. The win came in just his eighth race in the Formula First championship. Reeve also recorded the fastest race lap in two of the three races. In the three race meetings held so far, the Speedsport scholarship winner has racked up seven top-six finishes including three podiums and a race win. Reeve has adapted quickly to the single-seater race cars and the driving techniques needed to win races. “I’m learning so much every time I go out in the car,” Reeve says.

The movement continues within the Tasman Makos provincial rugby team with three players exiting and one new signing the past few weeks. Star winger and All Blacks sevens representative Bryce Heem will return to Auckland for the national provincial championship in 2015 after 24 over three seasons with the Makos. Playmaker Tom Marshall will head to Gloucester after his Super Rugby campaign with the Chiefs. Marshall scored 122 points in 44 games with Tasman. Winger Mitchell Scott signalled last month he would head to Perth to play for the Western Force after being cut by the Makos. Former Bay of Plenty and Highlanders loosehead prop Kane Hames will head south to Tasman for 2015.

MAKO PLAYERS MOVE

Blenheim racer Brook Reeve secured his debut win in the New Zealand Formula First championship, at Pukekohe over the weekend.

“I’ve picked up what’s required in drafting these cars. “I know now where I need to position myself to win. It’s hard work to drive [these cars] to

Morrison bird wins longest race from Stewart Island The last racing weekend of the year for the Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club was last Saturday, racing from both Invercargill 710 kms and Stewart Island 765 kms. The birds were released at 7.05 am and 6.45 am respectfully and with the heat and extremely strong head winds a tough race home was most likely.

The Stewart Island birds made the quicker time of the two races and the winning bird # 520 of Donald Morrison landed at his loft at Spring Creek after flying for 13 hours 18mins with a velocity of 957.89 meters per minute. Second place was Carl Kirkwood also of Spring Creek with his chequer # 82, with a velocity of 956.90

mpm, all that way and yet only barely a meter separating them, incredible, and even closer was the pigeon of Two Fisher’s whose # 132 had a speed of 956.83, that’s only a separation of .07 of a meter ! Winner of the Invercargill race was Carl’s daughter, Sindy and her red chequer # 367 landed just after 8.30 pm with darkness closing in,

and a velocity of 879.01 mpm. Second and third places went to Alister Cooper of Renwick and his two birds arrived home in the dark after nearly 14.30 hours on the wing to record velocities of 822.54 and 804.35 mpm. A fairly tough weekends racing but with all birds home safe and sound it rounded off a most successful old bird season.

Playgroup celebrates 25 year milestone The soon to be replaced Arahura ferry.

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk In 1989 a huge community effort saw the launch of the Dillons Point Community Playgroup and now 25 years on, with plenty of trials and challenges along the way, the group is celebrating it’s milestone birthday. Past and present parents and children of the playgroup are invited to join in the ‘fancy dress’ celebrations which will be held next Monday, December 15, from 10am - 11:30am. There will be a bouncy castle, face painting and a cake to celebrate. Playgroup committee chairperson Laressa Shenfield said the celebrations will be an opportunity for families to reflect and share memories of their time with the playgroup. “The Dillons Point Community Playgroup has played an important role in many parents’ lives, acting as a place to meet new people and helping them to integrate into the community. “It’s also been a place of cherished memories and a place for mums and carers to bring their children and play, enjoy a chat and cup of coffee,” she says. There are around 65 families enrolled with the playgroup which operates Mondays and Wednesday mornings, including the school holidays. Member Wendy Cresswell has been with the playgroup for 10 years, and as an educator she says she still really enjoys taking children along for fun, play and educational activities. “What I love most is the free time to play with the children, as well as the many wonderful people I have met over the years,” she says. The playgroup runs out of the Bright Centre at 2 Dillons Point Road and was established thanks largely to the efforts of Marion Rowe, who today is still involved. Interislander ferry Arahura replaced Kiwirail will replace the Interislander ferry Arahura with the Spanish-built ship Stena Alegra, It was announced yesterday that the ship, built in 1998 will replace the more than 30-year-old Arahura on the Cook Strait crossing between Picton and Wellington. It is understood the Stena Alegra will receive an upgrade and a name change before it is put into fulltime service in the middle of next year. Attempts to reach Kiwirail for comment were not successful yesterday but speculation had been intense about a replacement ferry in recent weeks. Earlier this month, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters had tipped the move would eventually happen The Stena Alegra was used as a six month replacement vessel earlier this year for the Aratere, which lost a propeller last November when a shaft broke. It did have a challenging time during its tenure. It suffered engine issues in Wellington Harbour in January. It also hit a wharf while berthing in Wellington and suffered a damaged hull as a result. A propeller also broke off while at sea.
